Auburn

Auburn, where the valley turns into the Sierra foothills. Five minutes to I-80, a mile to a brewery, and the American River canyon trailheads start at the edge of town.

Auburn is the last real town before the mountains, and it earns its keep twice over — a historic old town with proper restaurants, and some of the best trail running and mountain biking in Northern California out the back of it.

It is also the natural overnight stop on the way to Tahoe, which is why two near-identical houses on the same street make sense here.
